Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay began to develop her artistic and creative side in her early years because of her Aunt Denise. Aunt Denise worked the night shifts as a nursing assistant to ensure she could pursue her love of theater and literature in the daytime. DuVernay instantly fell in love after showing her the 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how the art form could be utilized to engage people. The time she spent in Selma Alabama inspired her later to make a film about The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. In 1990 DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English and African American study. When she was in school, DuVernay was interested in creating for broadcast journalism. She began as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to take a look at the junk from a home belonging to a jury member. Her tasks left her disappointed in journalism, so she made the decision to go into the field of publicity. DuVernay joined a small studio as a junior publicist immediately after graduation. The DuVernay Agency is her first agency for public relations.
